Abstract

Death rituals are essentially a transition process that humans go through in facing a period of crisis, society comes together to form social cohesion so that they are able to face social reality wisely in situations of grief. For the Taba people on Makian Island, the death ritual or Oppo is carried out for ten consecutive days involving the entire village community so it costs hundreds of millions of rupiah. So that bereaved families are not further burdened, educated groups, religious leaders and community leaders agreed to simplify Oppo's time and costs . It's just that women's groups protested and insisted that Oppo continue to be implemented as it should. This study aims to analyze the motivations that are the causes and motivations that are the goals of groups who want the Oppo tradition to be preserved. Based on observations, interviews and content analysis of Oppo ritual data , it shows that apart from the aim of helping families provide ritual offerings, there are also other motivations, namely providing sufficient food for ritual participants to serve and food for consumption by family members at home as well as preoccupation with producing gossip starting from everyday stories that without realizing it reveal disgrace in public. This article recommends the need to carry out outreach both in the realm of formal and non-formal education for the younger generation from an early age so that the Oppo ritual is carried out briefly and simply in terms of time and cost without reducing its substantive meaning.
