Abstract

Based on preliminary research conducted on October 10th, 2019 of the second year students of English education department at UIN Alauddin Makassar, the students’ motivation for speaking is very lacking, the main factor that caused it is that students did not have an interest in learning speaking. In this case, the researcher intended to find out any correlation of interest and motivation toward speaking achievement of the second year students of English education department at UIN Alauddin Makassar. The method used in this research was correlational quantitative method. The instruments of this research were questionnaire and document. Questionnaire was done to find out the score of students’ interest and motivation and documentation in the form of students’ speaking score were also conducted to determine students’ speaking achievement. The scores from both instruments were calculated and analyzed by using statistical procedure of product moment correlation through SPSS 22 program for windows. The result showed that, the correlation between interest and speaking that the number is -0.123 which means that the two variables have a weak correlation because it is below 0.5 and based on the probability value of sig. (2-tailed) interest with speaking = 0.269 > 0.05 which means there is no significant correlation. Likewise with motivation, the final result states that the correlation between motivation and speaking that the number is -0.130 which means that the two variables have a weak correlation because it is below 0.5 and based on the probability value of sig. (2-tailed) motivation with speaking = 0.269 > 0.05 which means there is no significant.  The correlation between  self-confidence and the speaking achievement is weak It is proven by the results of product moment correlation that  was -0.036 which means that the two variables have a weak correlation because it was below 0.5 and based on the probability value of sig. (2-tailed) self-confidence with speaking achievement = 0.747 > 0.05 which means there was no significant correlation. Thus, it can also be concluded that there is low correlation of self-confidence, interest, and motivation toward the speaking achievement of the second year students of English Education Department.at UIN Alauddin Makassar.

The result of this study showed that there is a low correlation of self-confidence toward the speaking achievement of the second year students of English Education Department at UIN Alauddin Makassar). This statement was proven based on the results of product moment correlation that the number was -0.036 which means that the two variables have a weak correlation because it was below 0.5 and based on the probability value of sig. (2-tailed) self-confidence with speaking achievement = 0.747 > 0.05 which means there was no significant correlation. Thus, it can also be concluded that there is low correlation of self-confidence toward the speaking achievement of the second year students of English Education Department.
